WKCTC's Paducah School of Art and Design Master Artist Workshops Begin Next Month

Workshops for Beginner and Advanced Participants, Register Early

Paducah, KY (06/03/2019) — This summer West Kentucky Community and Technical College's Paducah School of Art and Design (PSAD) will host its annual Master Artist Workshops program, featuring leading artists and educators from across the country. Artists and students of art can learn from the masters in three-day ceramics, painting, jewelry and fiber art workshops that will be held in July.

"We invite art enthusiasts of all skill levels to register for these unique workshops. As the master artists share their expertise, everyone - whether you are a beginner or an advanced artist - will have a wonderful learning experience," said Paul Aho, PSAD director.

Registration is going on now, and early registration is encouraged. To sign up, visit the PSAD website at psad.westkentucky.kctcs.edu/workshops/2019maw.aspx. The cost of each three-day workshop is $290. Supplies may be extra. Each workshop will also be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

July 5-7
"Narrative Ceramics with Imagery" with Benjie Heu
In this hands-on clay workshop, participants will create unique wall-mounted figurative ceramics that will be layered with imagery, text, and patterns. Heu will share his creative inspiration and demonstrate his process of hand-building with clay, colored slips, stencils, sgrafitto, wax resist, inlaid underglazes, and glazing for cone 6. Firing of the work created will need to be done after the workshop dates.

Heu is professor of ceramics at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. His artwork is exhibited nationally and internationally in juried, invitational, and solo exhibitions. Heu conducts visiting artist workshops and residencies at universities and other institutions across the United States.

July 5-7
"Color Expression: Paint What You Love" with Tim Jaeger
Paducah native Tim Jaeger is back by popular demand. In his painting workshop, participants can let go and allow their art to take place without preconceived notions. This class will focus on paintings that have light, color and attitude, and artists can leave their comfort zone and enter a world of exciting and expressive painting. Working on a variety of grounds, students will explore underpainting techniques, mark making, and significant color choices to push a painting further.

Jaeger now lives in Sarasota, Florida. He has emerged as a leading artist in South Florida and beyond, and his paintings can be found in numerous public and private collections in the United States and abroad.

July 5-7
"Reduce Future Waste, One Cloth at a Time" with Lily Liu
This hands-on fiber workshop introduces participants to the creation of a unique line of wearable art through the use of repurposed materials. The class will explore multiple techniques such as dyeing, discharging, deconstructing, reconstructing, embellishing, printing and stitching.

Liu started her art journey as a ceramic artist prior to embracing fiber art during graduate school. Her work deals with finding the balance of chance and plan, mindlessness and mindfulness. Most of her recent work has been focusing on reuse, recycle and repurpose to reduce future waste. Her fiber and ceramic work have been exhibited nationally and internationally.

July 12-14
"Beauty in the Mundane" with Jina Seo
Participants can explore nontraditional materials - domestic, natural, edible, fabric, leather or found objects - to create a wearable artwork that reveals the beauty of the mundane. This class will cover the basics of cold connecting, basic settings, and pin mechanisms, and students can Investigate methods to incorporate alternative materials with metal components.

Jina Seo is the assistant professor of metal and jewelry at Missouri State University. Her practice explores the relationships between body, garment, desire and space. By transforming materials into symbolic wearable objects, Seo creates a visual dialogue that uncovers the hidden intimate and sensual power. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including Munich Jewellery Week 2017.

West Kentucky Community and Technical College's Paducah School of Art and Design offers an associate in fine arts degree in visual art and an associate in applied science degree and certificate programs in visual communication: multimedia, as well as studio art classes for students of all levels and disciplines. Classes are offered on WKCTC's campus; at 905 Harrison Street; and at 919 Madison Street.
