MEDIA RELEASE: Paducah, KY (09/23/2017) — West Kentucky Community and Technical College will offer a variety of community education courses in October including two new classes to learn the basics of sign language and artistic fiber arts weaving.

Lifestyle, Fitness and Hobbies Offering

Beginning Sign Language - NEW
October 2 - 16, 6 - 8 p.m.
WKCTC Skilled Craft Training Center, Room 107 - Hickory, KY
Instructor: Nancy Strong
Cost: $45

This beginning class includes an introduction to the Deaf culture. Over 200 signs will be taught with classroom time utilized to practice these words and phrases. If you've ever wanted to learn sign language, this class is a good start. Class meets three consecutive Monday evenings.

Paducah School of Art Offerings

Photoshop - Digital Manipulation
October 2, 9, 16, & 23, 6:30 - 9 p.m.

Age: Adults Instructor: Alan Jackson
Cost: $115

Participants will learn how to use Adobe Photoshop to manipulate images, create composite images and retouch photographs. Students must be computer literate. This course is a perfect introduction to the power of Photoshop for beginners or to add to basic skills with the software.

Camera Phone 101
October 7, 14, and 21, 9:30 a.m. - Noon

Cost: $109 (includes $10 fee for studio supplies)

Learn how to take better photographs with a mobile device or smart phone. This class covers basic photographic considerations such as framing and the rule of thirds, lighting considerations such as the Golden Hour and using bounces and/or reflectors, as well as photo editing options using mobile apps (for Android and iPhone). Participants will also learn about output options for uploading to social media and printing hard copies of photographs.

Introduction to Weaving - NEW

Cost: Cost $109 (includes $10 fee for studio supplies)

This fiber art workshop provides a basic introduction to weaving and its application to create art with or without any looms. The course will build concepts and skills toward more advanced projects using the looms. Student supply cost will depend upon choice of materials with which to work.

Photographic Fundamentals 102
October 10 - November 7, 6. - 8 p.m.

Age: Adults Instructor: Jim Ethridge
Cost: $115

Delve deeper into what it takes to produce great photographs. Hands-on exercise in class will push participants to experiment what is possible through photography. There is a review of the basics and in-class discussion of several photographic subjects. A local field trip is planned for the class. An understanding of basic terminology and camera operation is helpful. Class meets five consecutive Tuesday evenings. Please bring your own camera to class. Digital cameras are recommended for this class. (Not a point and shoot.)

Oil Painting Fabric and Pattern from Life
October 14 and 21, 9:30 a.m. - Noon

During this workshop, students will learn how to mix colors from a limited palette and will be introduced to oil painting techniques to paint fabric from life. Participants will need to purchase and bring the following and wear appropriate clothing or bring an apron to class. One Night Intro to Cake Decorating Basics

Learn how to
make a great cake starting with the basics. Students will level, torte and ice cakes. They will also learn basic decorations such as star, shell, rosette, dot and more in only one class! Floral Design Offering

Basic Floral Design
October 12, 19, 26 and November 6, 6 - 8 p.m.
WKCTC Emerging Technology Center, Room 222
Age: Adults Instructor: Maryann Cain
Cost: $89

Maryann will introduce participants to the world of floral design. This class will focus on how to arrange fresh flowers and how to make bridal bouquets and boutonnieres, wreaths and holiday arrangements. Students will learn how to make bows and step by step floral design to create their own style and ultimately make their own arrangements. Class meets four times on three consecutive Thursday evenings and one Monday evening. Students will be responsible for some supplies.
