WKCTC Receives $8,000 Grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to Support Adult Education Program

Paducah, KY (08/14/2024) — The Dollar General Literacy Foundation (DGLF) recently awarded West Kentucky Community and Technical College (WKCTC) an $8,000 grant to support adult literacy. This local grant is a part of the Foundation's more than $10.6 million donated to support adult, family and summer literacy programs in the 48 states in which Dollar General operates. With today's grants, the DGLF also surpasses helping more than 20 million individuals achieve their educational dreams since its inception in 1993.

"WKCTC Adult Education prepares adult learners to use technology in the classroom to help them continue their education through college or move into the workforce," said Randal Scott, Interim Director of Adult Education. "The DGLF grant will help our students overcome the barrier of not having a computer and allow them to finish their courses from home."

WKCTC's Adult Education program serves some 400 people each year, offering free GED and literacy services to individuals who live or work in Carlisle, Graves and McCracken counties. These services help program participants improve reading, writing, math, language, technology and workplace skills, and to study for the GED high school equivalency. The DGLF grant funds will be used to replace a portion of the computers used by participants for academic assessment and instruction, as well as the Official Proctor GED test.

We hope these funds provide resources needed to positively change students' lives, helping them to build a brighter future for themselves and generations to come."

The DGLF supports organizations that increase access to educational programming, stimulate and enable innovation in the delivery of educational instruction and inspire a love of reading. Each year, DGLF awards funds to nonprofit organizations, schools, and libraries within a 15-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center to support adult, family, summer and youth literacy programs. The Foundation also offers a student referral program for individuals interested in learning how to read, speak English, or prepare for the high school equivalency exam. Referrals to a local organization that provides free literacy services are available online or through referral cards found in the Learn to Read brochures that are available at the cash register of every Dollar General store.
