WKCTC's Paducah School of Art and Design to host fiber art exhibition

Continues collaboration with American Quilter's Society for Spring Quilt Week

Paducah, KY (04/11/2019) — West Kentucky Community and Technical College's Paducah School of Art and Design (PSAD) will host "Desedamas," an exhibition of fiber art by Spanish artists Cecília and Merce González during Spring Quilt Week, April 24-27. The exhibition continues PSAD's collaboration with the American Quilter's Society (AQS) during its internationally renowned Fall and Spring Quilt Weeks in Paducah. The AQS sanctioned exhibition will be on display from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. each day during Spring Quilt Week in the Bill Ford Gallery at PSAD's 2D and Graphic Design Building, 905 Harrison Street.

Throughout the duration of Quilt Week, PSAD and "Desedamas" are included as a stop on the bus tour of AQS activities. Attendees should access the building through the public entry on Harrison Street.

"Desedamas" is also the name of the studio practice of Cecília and Merce González, who both began making art following other careers. In 2000, they began selling crafts employing silk, always looking to give an added value to the pieces they were creating and not just painting.

"Every piece was unique, and we sold our work in craft fairs throughout Spain. In 2006, we began to paint silk for patchwork and, although we knew how to sew, we began to learn specific techniques," said González. "Silk had always been our 'material' so, despite not being widely used in textile art, it was natural for us to go on working with it. Uniting these two skills, silk painting and textile art, opened to us an immense field in which to experiment. So much so that we have explored and developed our own techniques to work with this material, and we also became trainers."

Paul Aho, PSAD director, said he is delighted the art school is once again participating as an exhibition venue for this year's Spring Quilt Week in Paducah.

"With 'Desedamas,' we continue a tradition of quilt exhibitions that push the boundaries and expectations of quilting and we are pleased to be a part of the many events and attractions that make Paducah's Quilt Week the American Quilter's Society's biggest event of the year."
