2017 May 22

Nearly 200 family members, friends and college faculty and staff celebrated the success of twenty-one students who participated in the 2017 GED Graduation in West Kentucky Community and Technical College's Clemens Fine Arts Center May 18.

Amanda Harris of Mayfield participated in the graduation ceremony and was among the 64 GED recipients of the college's Graves-McCracken County Adult Learning Centers.

Eight students who participated in the college's English as a Second Language program were also recognized during the ceremony.

2015-16 GED recipient Jessica Jackson of Paducah spoke to the audience and shared how the college's adult learning center helped change her life and the importance of continuing to move forward.

"Never give up. Never give up on your dreams. Do it for your children and your family," said Jackson.

Jackson, now a student at WKCTC, is working toward an associate in applied degree in health science technology. She plans to work as a phlebotomist in the future.

In her first year as the WKCTC Adult Learning Center Director, Dr. Kay Combs, was thrilled with the students and their achievement.

"I am so impressed with the quality of students we have at both the Graves and McCracken County Adult Learning Centers," said Dr. Combs. "Last year, almost 50 percent of our GED graduates transitioned to a college to work toward a credential or a diploma, and this year that tradition continues. We again have almost half of the GED students who have already enrolled in college or are planning to enroll, many of them here at WKCTC. This a true testament to their dedication to prepare for a better future for their family," she added.

Also impressed with the quality of the staff at the learning centers, Dr. Combs said "they do an outstanding job preparing students academically for the GED test and beyond. It's a joy to work with staff who care so much about the success of the students."
