Amia Wright of Paducah was Named WKCTC February Student of the Month

2017 May 12

Paducah's Amia Wright was named Student of the Month for February at West Kentucky Community and Technical College.

"It's an honor to be able to represent the cosmetology department and the college as a whole," said Wright. "....It's important to come to school every day prepared and ready for another chance to be better than I was yesterday."

Cosmetology Program Coordinator Tracy McDanel said Wright goes above and beyond her role as a student, has excellent technical skills and actively participates and puts forth full effort on any project she is given.

"Amia is kind, compassionate, always willing to be helpful, and exhibits good character and shows respect to other fellow classmates, staff, and faculty," said McDanel. "For all of these reasons - academic effort, enthusiasm about learning and positive engagement in this school community, Amia well deserves to be our Student of the Month."

The hair and beauty industry has always been a part of Wright's life. Her father has been cutting hair for years and her mother is a licensed beautician.

"Being a beautician has always been a lifestyle that came naturally to me," said the 25-year-old Wright.

Set to graduate from WKCTC in December 2017 with a certificate in cosmetology, Wright plans to open her own salon/boutique, meet new people and promote her cosmetics and jewelry line following graduation.

To those attending college or hoping to attend in the future, Wright's advice is to "be who you are and follow through with your dreams."

Student of the Month recipients receive $100, a certificate of excellence, recognition on the WKCTC Facebook page, campus announcements and Web site. Recipients are also recognized by Pepsi MidAmerica and receive one free month's supply of their favorite Pepsi product.
