Gavin Posey Elected to Serve on State Education Board

2017 Aug 24

Gavin Posey of Paducah is continuing a tradition in his family of attending West Kentucky Community and Technical College (WKCTC) to earn a college degree. The Posey triplets - Gavin, his sister, Brooke, and his brother, Mason - all attend WKCTC and are following in the footsteps of a host of relatives who have attended the college.

Their grandmother, Elaine Smith, graduated with a nursing degree from Paducah Community College (what's now WKCTC) in 1971 at the same time her father, Kenneth Blackburn, was taking classes there. The Posey parents, Scott and Ashley, also attended classes at Paducah's college.

Gavin Posey recently made his own collegiate history after he was one of two students recently elected by their Student Government Association (SGA) peers to serve on the Kentucky Community and Technical College System's (KCTCS) Board of Regents.

KCTCS is governed by a 14-member Board of Regents. Eight members are appointed by the Governor and six are elected members: two members of the teaching faculty elected by faculty; two members of the nonteaching personnel elected by nonteaching personnel; and two members of the student body elected by students.

Posey along with Gateway Community and Technical College (GCTC) student Ric Smith will serve one-year terms on the board and as student body co-presidents. Their terms begin immediately and continue through August 2018.

Elected as WKCTC's 2017-18 SGA president, the 19-year-old Posey is also vice president of Phi Theta Kappa-Iota Eta Chapter, a student ambassador and a graduate of the Paducah Youth L.E.A.D. program. He is pursuing both an associate in science and an associate in arts degree at WKCTC while his sister was recently accepted in the WKCTC's nursing program and his brother also expects to gain an associate in science degree.

"My family has been blessed to live here in Paducah for multiple generations, and to also have the opportunity to attend PCC and WKCTC," said Posey. "I wanted to come to WKCTC to focus on growing as a student. I am confident after earning my associate degrees in the spring, I will be more than capable of completing my bachelor's degree, largely in part to my experience here at WKCTC."
