Book Discussion of WKCTC's 10th Anniversary One Book Read of The Age Miracles

Discussion to be Held at Graves County Public Library March 8

Paducah, KY (02/13/2018) — The public is invited to a book discussion of The Age of Miracles March 8 at Graves County Public Library. Dr. Tyra Henderson, associate professor of English at West Kentucky Community and Technical College, will lead the book discussion at the library from 6 - 7 p.m.

The Age of Miracles, written by New York Times bestselling author, Karen Thompson Walker, is WKCTC's 2017-18 One Book Read, and marks the college's 10th anniversary for the project.

The book details the rotation of the Earth that has begun to slow, making the days and nights grow longer, disrupting everyone and everything and throwing life into constant disarray. Crops begin to fail, the oceans rise, food and water are hoarded, and there is talk about the end of the world with the possibility of having to relocate to another planet.

The story revolves around 11-year-old Julia, who on top of the catastrophic events that take place with the "slowing," has to also deal with her own personal world of pain, isolation, and vulnerability - ultimately finding the strength to cope with everything that's happening in the world and in her life.

"This book is sure to create an interesting discussion with its coming of age story and the idea of an alternate reality on Earth," said Henderson. "It even prompts the question, 'What would we do if something similar occurred?'"

Henderson recommends attending the book discussion even if you haven't read the book. "Whether you've read the book or not, you will be able to participate in the conversation," she said.

Karen Thompson Walker will visit the WKCTC Clemens Fine Arts Center March 13-14 as the finale to this year's One Book Read. She will present a public presentation March 13 at 7 p.m. and a student presentation March 14 at 11 a.m. Both presentations are free and open to the public.
