Paducah, KY (07/17/2017) — Dr. David J. Heflin of Symsonia has been named vice president of academic affairs at West Kentucky Community and Technical College. Dr. Heflin succeeds Dr. Tena Payne who retired June 30.
"We are honored to have Dr. Heflin take this new position on our leadership team," said WKCTC President Anton R. Reece. "He brings with him an impressive track record in academic affairs and student success."
A native of southeastern Kansas, Dr. Heflin is a Joplin High School graduate who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Radiology from Missouri State University and became a registered radiographer, both in 1990. He completed programs in abdominal and obstetrics/gynecology and vascular technology at St. Luke's Hospital School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography in Kansas City, Mo. in 1991 and 1992, respectively. He gained a Master of Science degree in organizational communications in 2010 and a doctorate in educational policy studies and evaluation from the University of Kentucky in 2015.
Dr. Heflin worked 14 years as a registered songrapher and registered radiographer before joining WKCTC full-time in 2008.
Prior to his current post, Dr. Heflin served as associate vice president of academic affairs, director of curriculum and instruction and lead several collegewide endeavors such as leading a collegewide textbook taskforce that resulted in more than $500,000 in student savings in textbook costs. In the classroom, Dr. Heflin taught vascular ultrasond and vascular scanning as an adjunct instructor before becoming an associate professor and coordinator of the radiography program at WKCTC.
Among his many awards, Dr. Heflin has received the WKCTC/Paducah Junior College Board of Trustees Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching Award and the Outstanding Teacher Award for Allied Health and Personal Services Division as well as been recognized as an United Way of Paducah-McCracken County Leadership Giver.
Dr. Heflin and his wife, Carla, will celebrate 25 years of marriage later this year.
