WKCTC celebrates Tree Week 2024 with events on its Nature Trail
Paducah, KY (09/27/2024) — West Kentucky Community and Technical College (WKCTC) will celebrate Tree Week 2024 from October 14-17. Tree Week is a celebration of trees and all the ways they affect our lives. The annual event is sponsored by the Urban Forest Initiative (UFI), a collaborative group of University of Kentucky and Kentucky community stakeholders. With a purpose of promoting and protecting the urban tree canopy throughout the state, the UFI is dedicated to maintaining the current tree canopy while promoting and planning for our future urban forests.
WKCTC's Sustainability Committee has planned activities for Tree Week, including the following:
Monday, October 14, 11 a.m. to Noon: Showing of the documentary, "Intelligent Trees" in Waller Hall, WKCTC Campus. The documentary explores the research supporting communication between trees - that they talk, know family ties and care for their young.
Tuesday, October 15, 11 a.m. to Noon: Dendrochronology demonstration with Associate Professor of Biological Science Steve Cahill. Dendrochronology is the technique of studying growth and environmental change by observing the patterns of annual growth rings in trees.
Also on Tuesday there will be a tree handout. Various tree species (in potted in containers) will be available while supplies last.
Both activities will be held on the WKCTC Nature Trail. Enter the main college gates at 4810 Alben Barkley Drive, and the trail is located near the lower parking lot of Carson Hall (on the right as you enter campus).
Wednesday, October 16: All-day family event at the McCracken County Public Library-Create a Tree Scene with Shapes.
11 a.m. to Noon: Poetry Reading at the WKCTC Amphitheatre -Join us for an outdoor celebration of Tree Week with a poetry, featuring an open-mic session! Participants are invited to share their favorite poems or present original works. (In case of rain this will be moved to the Student Center.)
Thursday, October 17: ISA Certified Arborist and Urban and Community Forestry Partnership Coordinator, Jack Baggett will visit WKCTC to tour our campus and our tree population.
