WKCTC PLANS ACTIVE SHOOTER DRILL OCTOBER 2

Paducah, KY (09/17/2019) — West Kentucky Community and Technical College will have an active shooter drill on campus Wednesday, October 2. All WKCTC locations will participate in the exercise. No outside emergency agencies or "actors" will be participating in the October drill.

Officials said WKCTC's emergency drills do not include outside emergency agencies or "actors" during odd numbered years.

September is recognized as National Preparedness Month (NPM) which serves as a reminder that everyone must take action to prepare, now and throughout the year, for the types of emergencies that could affect where they live, work, and also where they visit. David Wallace, WKCTC operations manager of security and safety, said the college takes the opportunity to test its preparedness seriously. "This exercise is a key part of our campus emergency crisis plan," Wallace said. "The focus of the October exercise will be to practice the college's emergency procedures in response to a mock campus shooting."

During the exercise, the college will go into "lockdown" in response to an active shooter scenario beginning at 9 am. A mock alert will be sent through the college's Safety Notification Alert Process (SNAP) and college entrances will be blocked for no more than 30 minutes.

"As we practice our safety procedures, we want to make sure the public, our students, and their families know this will be only a mock exercise. Our gates will be closed during the drill, and we ask for everyone's patience during that time," Wallace said.

A post-drill debriefing meeting will be held in Haws Gym. The meeting will be open to all WKCTC employees and students.
