WKCTC's unveils new name for food pantry at grand opening

Paducah, KY (10/08/2019) — The Campus Cupboard. That is the new name of West Kentucky Community and Technical College's food pantry that was unveiled during a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony October 7 in the college's Nemer Building, the location of the pantry.

WKCTC students, faculty and staff participated in a pantry naming contest during September. Sally Mahoney, who works in the college's Student Support Services (TRIO) office, won a $50 gas card for her submission.

The pantry was created for WKCTC students in February 2018 with initial funding from the Kentucky Community and Technical College System and matching funds from Paducah Junior College, Inc., the foundation of WKCTC. Over the last year, more than 40 students have received supplemental assistance to help with food insecurity.

The grand opening served two purposes - to reveal the new name and to bring more awareness to WKCTC students about available pantry services.

"The significance and importance (of the pantry), and as importantly, raising the awareness that a fact of life is that for some our students, one of the challenges is related to food insecurities," WKCTC President Anton Reece said as he addressed the nearly 75 students, faculty and staff who attended the ceremony. He said the college should be in tune with student needs and commended the WKCTC faculty, staff and student leadership for "not only raising that awareness but for also doing something about it," by working together to help make the pantry possible on campus.

The Campus Cupboard continues through donations of non-perishable goods and supplies. Needed items include but are not limited to soups, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, oatmeal, macaroni and cheese, flavored rice packets, crackers, and canned tuna/chicken. Supplies needed include laundry detergent, paper towels, and toilet paper.

Anyone who would like to contribute items for students can bring them to the Nemer Building on campus, Monday-Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. For more information, contact Amy Elmore at amy.elmore@kctcs.edu or (270) 534-3118.
