Calloway County High School Wins First Place at WKCTC's 2019 President's Cup

McCracken County High School and Paducah Tilghman High School Second and Third Place Winners

Paducah, KY (01/11/2019) — Nine regional high schools competed in the 2019 President's Cup Academic Bowl held at West Kentucky Community and Technical College January 11.

Calloway County took home the top prize with McCracken County and Paducah Tilghman high schools winning second and third place trophies, respectively.

Other participating Kentucky high schools were Ballard Memorial, Caldwell County, Graves County, Murray, and St. Mary. Illinois' Cairo High School also participated.

"We are excited to again host many of our region's most talented students here at WKCTC as they prepare for their district Governor's Cup competition later this month," said Gary Goodaker, WKCTC mathematics professor, who helped coordinate the event. "This event is a great showcase for our local students to show the results of their hard work in the classroom.

The competition consisted of individual written assessments in and arts/humanities, language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and quick recall matches.

The top five, written assessment winners were chosen from each category. First place winners were:

  • Arts/Humanities (tie) - Kati Wyant, Calloway County and Paige Kight, Paducah Tilghman
  • Language Arts - Caden Emerson, Calloway County
  • Science - Mason Wooten, McCracken County
  • Social Studies - Noah Ellis, McCracken County
  • Mathematics - Andrew Hardt, Calloway County
  • Quick Recall - Calloway County

Calloway County head coach, Erica Gray, said the team practices four days a week in preparation for the President's Cup at WKCTC and the upcoming district tournaments. "We are thrilled to have seen our hard work pay off. Seeing students succeed as a result of their preparation is one of the most important lessons you can hope for as a coach," said Gray. "We look forward to excellent competition at districts."

The Governor's Cup is held at the district level on January 22 and 26 at Paducah Tilghman followed by the regionals on February 11 and 16 in Murray and the state competition March 16-18 in Louisville.
