Two WKCTC Students Named 2025 KCTCS Scholars
Paducah, KY (05/15/2025) — Two students from West Kentucky Community and Technical College have been named 2025 Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) Scholars, a prestigious recognition awarded to just two students from each of the system's 16 colleges.
Samantha Katelyn Murray of Benton and Joan McLeod-Philbee of Calvert City were among 36 students honored for their academic achievement, leadership and service. KCTCS Scholars must maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher and demonstrate excellence in multiple areas.
Murray graduated from WKCTC on May 12 with an Associate in Science degree and plans to pursue a career in medicine. Despite facing significant personal challenges - including surviving abuse, becoming a single mother, and being widowed before her first wedding anniversary - she has shown remarkable determination to further her education.
She volunteers at the Merryman House domestic crisis center and serves in a leadership role with Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for two-year colleges. Murray will attend Murray State University in the fall and plans to transfer to Dartmouth College to continue her studies.
McLeod-Philbee also graduated May 12, earning an Associate in Applied Science in Business Administration with a management focus. A non-traditional student, McLeod-Philbee courageously migrated to the United States in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and became a U.S. citizen with a vision of a better life. She eventually earned her G.E.D. and in the fall of 2022 at age 54 she enrolled at WKCTC.After earning her GED through WKCTC's adult education program, she enrolled in the college's night business program while balancing full-time work and family responsibilities.
"Joan is the most customer service-driven individual I've ever met," her nominator said. "She embodies integrity, kindness, and a true commitment to her community."
McLeod-Philbee plans to begin pursuing her bachelor's degree at Murray State University next spring after taking time off to be with family.
WKCTC also recently announced that Murray, along with fellow students Megan Newman and Patrick Sanders, were named to the Phi Theta Kappa 2024-2025 All-USA Academic Team. Newman received the Unsung Hero Student Award at the college's spring commencement. All three received diplomas during the May 12 ceremony.
The All-USA Academic Team honors students who exemplify academic excellence, leadership, and service beyond the classroom. Nominees compete nationally for a $5,000 scholarship, with each college allowed to nominate up to four students.
Phi Theta Kappa is the official honor society of two-year colleges and recognizes academic achievement while offering opportunities for leadership and community engagement.
