WKCTC offering culinary camp for kids

Week of June 6 and June 13

Paducah, KY (05/25/2022) — Kids in fifth through eighth grade can enjoy fun in the kitchen with a four-day culinary camp at West Kentucky Community and Technical College in June.

Kids Culinary Camp will be held each day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Bistro located in the Anderson Technical Building at 4810 Alben Barkley Drive in Paducah. The camp for fifth-sixth graders will be held June 6-10, and for seventh-eighth graders June 13-17.

WKCTC's Chef Laura Farrell will teach participants about meal planning, food preparation, cooking, nutrition, kitchen rules, sanitation, food safety, table manners and service. Daily activities will go along with the camp menu that students will prepare for their lunch.

Monday, June 6 (5th-6th Grade) and June 13 (7th-8th Grade)
Students will meet one another and Chef Farrell. Students will learn about kitchen rules including sanitation, safety and conduct. The day's activities/topics will be exercises in Glo-Germ handwashing, identifying kitchen tools and measuring. Each student will receive an apron and be divided into teams to prepare a breakfast menu.

  • Fresh-squeezed Orange Juice

Tuesday, June 7 (5th-6th Grade) and June 14 (7th-8th Grade)
The activities/topics will be how to set a table, napkin-folding, table manners and service. Student teams will prepare a lunch menu.

  • Bread Sticks
  • Garden Salad
  • Watermelon Granitas

Wednesday, June 8 (5th-6th Grade) and June 15 (7th-8th Grade)
Nutrition: MyPlate model of healthy eating and health substitutions will be the activities/topics for the day. Student teams will prepare a dinner menu.

  • Rosemary Pork Loin and Roast Potatoes with Green Beans
  • Yeast Rolls
  • Peach Crumble

Thursday, June 9 (5th-6th Grade) and June 16 (7th-8th Grade)
Meal planning and preparation how-to's and celebration treats will be the final day's activities/topics. Student teams will prepare baked treats.

  • Snickerdoodles
  • Chocolate Chip Blondies
  • Lemon Puppy Chow
  • S'mores Bark

Students will also receive a souvenir cookbook of camp recipes and a treat box to take home.
