WKCTC Promotes Diabetes Awareness Month
Paducah, KY (11/14/2021) — The lights highlighting the Allied Health Building at West Kentucky Community and Technical College are blue and will continue to be blue to commemorate Diabetes Awareness Month.
According to the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service, diabetes is the number one cause of disability for Kentuckians and the fifth leading cause of death by disease. Among the 50 states, Kentucky ranks seventh for having the highest number of adults diagnosed with diabetes.
K. Amy Fennel, a nursing instructor at West Kentucky Community and Technical College, said identifying those at risk for diabetes is one of the keys to reducing the disease.
"We hope the blue lights this month will remind people to find out more about diabetes and focus on their health and wellness as the key to prevention," Fennel said. "Early detection of diabetes can help prevent strokes, vision problems, and kidney disease, and is one of our best weapons in helping diabetic patients live their fullest and healthiest lives."
