WKCTC's Challenger Learning Center at Paducah will celebrate 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing October 18

Paducah, KY (09/28/2019) — West Kentucky Community and Technical College's Challenger Learning Center at Paducah (CLC) will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing with, Moon and a Movie, October 18. The event is free and open to the public and will be held from 6 - 8:30 p.m. in the college's Clemens Fine Arts Center.

The movie, Fly Me to the Moon (rated G), will be shown in the Clemens theatre from 7:00-8:30 p.m. and attendees will enjoy free popcorn, water and MoonPies during the movie. They can also enjoy fun activities about the moon in the college's Student Center prior the movie. NASA items will be given away while supplies last and everyone will have the opportunity to see real moon rocks from NASA.

Fifty years ago, NASA's Apollo 11 successfully landed humans on the surface of the moon and brought them home safely - for the first time in history. Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin and Michael Collins began their journey when a Saturn V rocket blasted off from Florida's Kennedy Space Center on July 16, 1969.

Four days later, Armstrong and Aldrin landed Apollo 11's lunar module, Eagle, on the moon's Sea of Tranquility. Collins orbited 60 miles above them in the command module that would eventually bring the three astronauts back home to Earth on July 24. As Armstrong stepped off the lunar module on July 20, 1969, he said the now infamous words, "That's one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind."

Mellisa Duncan, CLC at Paducah executive director, said the movie event is a fun way to celebrate both the moon landing anniversary and the mission of the center.

"Moon and a Movie will be lots of fun for people of all ages to learn about the moon and our country's historic mission to the moon." said Duncan, "It's not every day you get the chance to touch REAL moon rocks!"
