WKCTC's One Book Read Broadsides Opening Reception March 1
Reception Free and open to the public
Paducah, KY (02/23/2019) — West Kentucky Community and Technical College (WKCTC) will host an opening reception for its One Book Read Broadsides project March 1 from 5-6:30 p.m. in its Clemens Fine Arts Center Gallery. The reception is free and open to the public.
Visual communication students from WKCTC's Paducah School of Art and Design (PSAD) created broadside posters using excerpts from the 2018-2019 One Book Read of Water Street, the award-winning book from renowned author and Kentuckian, Crystal Wilkinson, who will visit the college March 12-13. The exhibit showcases single broadsides that were inspired by individual stories in the book as well as a 15-piece collection, each one representing a paragraph of the first chapter, "Welcome to Water Street."
"The way the book is laid out as a continuation from the 1970s into current times lent itself perfectly to broadsides," said Beverly Quimby, PSAD Visual Communication Program Coordinator. "This book was very special and the students have enjoyed it, especially the ones who read the book in English 101. It was exciting to watch the students work on the project, and I think it's probably some of the best they've ever done."
A finalist for both the Orange Prize and the Hurston-Wright Legacy Award, Water Street reveals emotionally raw, multifaceted tales of race, class, gender, mental illness, and interpersonal relationships, The book has mature themes that will encourage critical thinking and discussion of complex social issues.
Wilkinson is an award-winning feminist poet, novelist, memoirist, and professor from Indian Creek, Kentucky. She currently lives in Lexington and is a founding member of the Affrilachian Poets Collective. She is an Associate Professor of English in the Master in Fine Arts in Creative Writing Program at the University of Kentucky.
The One Book Read of Water Street has been made possible through a matching grant from Kentucky Humanities in cooperation with the National Endowment for the Humanities.
