WKCTC Sonography Club providing free ultrasound exams to help campus food pantry

Paducah, KY (11/15/2019) — The Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) student club at West Kentucky Community and Technical wants to help students at the college who need help for the Thanksgiving holiday. On November 25, the club is offering a variety of free non-diagnostic ultrasound exams to those who bring a needed food item to WKCTC's food pantry - The Campus Cupboard.

Pantry items can be delivered and exams will performed from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Allied Health Building, Room W105. No appointment is necessary. Walk-ins welcome.

"This is a food drive to help stock our food pantry and provide our students who have food insecurity with items they need not only for the Thanksgiving holiday, but whenever items are needed," said Kim Savage, DMS clinical coordinator. "The day is also another educational opportunity for our students. Under the supervision of our DMS faculty, the students will scan the anatomy of our volunteers who come for the exams and educate them on the body's organs and their functions," she added.

Needed pantry Items include canned foods, toiletries, laundry and dish detergent, paper products, and pantry staples such as peanut butter, jelly and Saltine crackers.

Exams and schedule are:

  • 8 - 11 a.m. - abdominal and obstetric scans
  • Noon - 3 p.m. - vascular, abdominal, and obstetric scans

Those who volunteer for the exams will be asked to sign a consent form upon arrival. For an obstetric scan, the volunteer must already have had a normal ultrasound performed and a note from a doctor's office stating permission to be scanned.

"Last year was our first time hosting the event and it was very successful. Our students volunteer for organizations in our community year round, but this event is a way that we can bring people into our environment," said Nichole Toon, DMS program coordinator. "We want to both showcase our skills and help the community."
