WKCTC Student Awarded KHA Scholarship

Paducah, KY (08/28/2019) — Skye Jones, a student at West Kentucky Community and Technical College and a resident of the Scholar House of Paducah, recently received a one-year, $2,500 scholarship from the Scholarship Committee for the Kentucky Housing Association sponsored by Arthur J. Gallagher.

Thirteen applicants from various Kentucky public housing authorities and Section 8 agencies applied for this scholarship opportunity. Jones, the sole recipient from western Kentucky, was one of four applicants selected.

"The exciting yet challenging demands of balancing motherhood, work, and higher education will be greatly alleviated with this awarded scholarship," said Jones. "The Scholar House of Paducah facilitates educationally driven parents and their children to have all the tools needed to be successful in a beautiful living space close to campus."

To receive the scholarship, Jones was required to write three essays, gather four letters of recommendation, and send confirmation of her academic and extra-curricular activities on campus. She currently serves as a member of Phi Theta Kappa, TRIO Student Support Services, and as an alternate to WKCTC Board of Appeals. She has also been a student worker on campus since 2018 working in Matheson Library and WKCTC Admissions office. She made the Dean's List for fall 2018 and spring 2019.

"Being involved has rooted me in WKCTC and from here, my dream career is coming into fruition which will be rewarding for myself, my son, and my husband." said the 28-year-old Murray native.

After beginning her educational journey at Murray State University in 2009, Jones decided to return to college at WKCTC in fall 2018 to continue her education. Just over a week ago on August 19, she began her first semester of studying diagnostic medical sonography, a selective admissions program that accepts 12 students each year. She is set to graduate from WKCTC as a registered diagnostic medical sonographer in December 2020.
