WKCTC cosmetology student instructor receives scholarship!

Congratulations to Vivian "Nikki" De La Paz, a student a West Kentucky Community and Technical College, as the recipient of the first James Wright Cosmetology Scholarship during a special presentation in the college's Bistro on September 19, 2022. A graduate of WKCTC with an associate in applied science degree in cosmetology in 2020, De La Paz, who is working in the beauty industry, is studying to be a cosmetology instructor. Bethany Edwards, Sheri Wright and Kathryn Thomas of Paducah's State Beauty Supply presented the $500 scholarship to De La Paz, in honor of their late father and husband, James Wright, who passed away in November 2021. De La Paz said she is grateful for this new opportunity. "I am very thankful for all the instructors (at WKCTC) who have helped me. I am super grateful for State Beauty Supply." Way to go Nikki. We are #WKCTCProud of you!

WKCTC Student Receives Omega Psi Psi Scholarship

West Kentucky Community and Technical College sophomore Shenelie Askew of Paducah was recently named one of three students to receive a scholarship from the Omega Psi Psi Fraternity, Inc. Shenelie, the daughter of Lela and Bill Askew and a Paducah Tilghman High School graduate, has a 4.0 GPA at WKCTC.

Skye Jones, a student at West Kentucky Community and Technical College and a resident of the Scholar House of Paducah, recently received a one-year, $2,500 scholarship from the Scholarship Committee for the Kentucky Housing Association. Congratulations Skye!

WKCTC Graduate Receives Scholarship at WKU

Dallas McKinney, a West Kentucky Community and Technical College graduate, was recently one of two students to be awarded scholarships by the American Meterological Society. McKinney, the son of Tim and Tonya McKinney of Mayfield and a senior at Western Kentucky University (WKU), received the AMS/Glickman Family Scholarship. Olivia Cahill, daughter of Pat and Billie Cahill of Dry Ridge, received the AMS/Ken Reeves AccuWeather Scholarship. Both are pursuing bachelor's degrees in meteorology at WKU, according to the college. Twenty-one senior undergraduate scholarships were awarded this year. The scholarships, awarded for the senior year, are designed to encourage outstanding senior undergraduates to continue pursuing careers in the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic sciences. The various scholarships are based on merit and are awarded to students who have shown the potential for accomplishment in these fields. McKinney was awarded the Kentucky TRIO Programs Susan Adams Leadership Award (April 2019), NOAA Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship (May 2018), and West Kentucky Community and Technical College Unsung Student Hero Award (May 2017). He is interested in weather forecasting. McKinney plans to attend graduate school and looks forward to conducting research in climate change and making weather forecasts more accurate. He aspires to work as a forecaster with the National Weather Service. Congratulations on receiving the scholarship, Dallas!!

WKCTC Student Receives Anglers Scholarship

Sarah Morehead is one of five high school anglers to receive a freshmen scholarship from Lew's and Strike King this year. Lew's Fishing is a Springfield, MO based supplier of fishing equipment and tackle. Strike King is a Collierville, TN based supplier of fishing tackle and sunglasses. The Freshman Scholarship Program was awarded to five deserving high school anglers who must completed an application. The Future Fisherman Foundation assisted in the screening and processing of the applications. Sarah attended McCracken County High School, where she excelled in the classroom as well as her school sanctioned fishing team, according to an August 21th article in "Wired2Fish". Sarah recently began her studies at West Kentucky Technical and Community College and plans to focus on education and horticulture. Congratulations, Sarah! We're happy to have you at WKCTC.

Congratulations to Skylar Nunley on winning the Kentucky Education Association-Student Program Marvin Dodson-Carl Perkins Scholarship for 2016. The KEA Student Program is a professional association for college students preparing to enter the teaching profession. It has members at 36 Kentucky colleges and universities.

Seven West Kentucky Community & Technical College recently graduated from the Paducah Police Department's 20th Citizens Police Academy. The 13-week class provides people, especially criminal justices students, with insight into how the Paducah Police Department operates, what the police can do and why the police do what they do.

Local NAACP Branch Awards Scholarships to WKCTC Students

Seven West Kentucky Community and Technical College students were recognized during the Annual Freedom Fund Banquet November 1, 2015 in Paducah. Each of the students received the 2015 Boyles/Coleman Scholarship based on their community service, academic standing and written essay. The scholarship funds can be used toward the cost of books, tuition or other educational related fees and services.

The Zonta Scholarship is awarded annually from the Zonta Club of Paducah to a nontraditional female student pursuing a college degree. The $500 scholarship helps to help pay for tuition, books or any expense that will enable student recipients to further their education.
