A Sweet Competition: WKCTC Hosts Successful Pi(e) Day Event
Paducah, KY (03/15/2025) — In a delicious yet messy victory, WKCTC student Jazz Hudson was the winner of this year's West Kentucky Community and Technical College Pi(e) Day celebration, an event engaging students, faculty, and staff in an exciting pie-eating competition last week. The event, which also included fun presentations about the history of the mathematical constant pi, concluded at 3:14 p.m., the approximate value of the number represented by pi.
Six faculty and staff, and 12 students competed, and the winners of the student competition are:
First Place: Jazz Hudson - $100 gas gift card and a first-place trophy to take home.
Second Place: Timmy White - $50 gift card.
Third Place: Ricardo Morales - $25 gift card.
In the faculty and staff competition Dr. Kim Russell, English Program Coordinator, claimed first place. Dr. Russell received an Amazon gift card, bragging rights, and a new traveling trophy that will be engraved annually with the names of the winners.
This year's Pi(e) Day event was a collaborative effort across WKCTC, with the library partnering with multiple departments, faculty, staff, and leadership team members to make the event a success. Faculty members encouraged student participation by offering extra credit opportunities in their courses. The library also showcased a display of math and Pi-related books available for checkout, further emphasizing the significance of the event.
"I am so proud that the library has created an event that involves students, faculty, and staff in a campus-wide partnership collaboration," said Amy Sullivan, WKCTC Director of Library Services. "Pi(e) Day has brought us all together into one of the biggest events on campus we look forward to annually."
The Pi(e) Day event at WKCTC will return in 2026 with even more fun and opportunities for involvement.
