Black History Month celebrations at WKCTC feature special events and programming
Paducah, KY (02/06/2025) — West Kentucky Community and Technical College (WKCTC) will host a dynamic lineup of events to celebrate Black History Month throughout February, with a focus on the rich history, culture, and achievements of African-Americans. Events during the month will feature engaging programs, interactive experiences, and inspiring stories from across the community, culminating in a special week titled "Bridging to the Future" from February 24-28.
"These celebrations remind us that Black history is American history and are designed to bring our entire campus community together," said Juanita Killebrew, Student Support Coordinator at the college. "Through music, cuisine, literature, and dialogue, we're creating spaces where everyone can engage with-and appreciate-the profound contributions of African-Americans to our shared heritage."
Black History Month Mondays: A Week of Interactive Events
Each Monday in February, WKCTC will host special programs for students and the community from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
February 3 - Music that Inspires (Matheson Library Reading Room): A review of the role of music in the African-American experience.
February 10 - Taste of Cuisine (Matheson Library Reading Room): A culinary journey through dishes that have influenced Black culture.
February 24 - Past and Present Historical Milestones (Student Center): A reflective event exploring significant historical moments and milestones in African-American history. This event will serve as the official kick-off for "Bridging to the Future" week.
Featured Week: "Bridging to the Future" (February 24-28)
A highlight of the month's programming, this will include the following key events:
WKCTC Alumni Spotlight February 25 | 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. | Student Center Listen and learn from the achievements of WKCTC alumni who have overcome challenges and made a significant impact in their careers and communities. This midday speaker series will inspire attendees with stories of their determination to succeed. Light refreshments will be provided.
Brave New Voices. February 26 | 6 - 7:30 p.m. | Student Center This event recognizes the leadership and innovation of local students who are promoting cultural awareness in their schools. The evening will include an awards ceremony honoring youth who are making a difference in the community.
Crystal Wilkinson: Novelist, Poet, and Essayist February 27 | 7 - 8:30 p.m. Clemens Fine Arts CenterJoin award-winning novelist, poet, and essayist Crystal Wilkinson for an evening of storytelling. A recipient of the NAACP Image Award and the Ernest J. Gaines Prize for Literary Excellence, Wilkinson will share her insights on identity and heritage as she discusses her recent book, "Praisesong for the Kitchen Ghosts," a national-bestselling culinary memoir.
Paducah Tilghman High School AALC Annual Celebration and Dinner. February 28 | 5:30 p.m. Paducah Tilghman High School In partnership with the Paducah Tilghman High School African American Leadership Club (AALC), this event brings the community together to celebrate Black excellence. Tickets are $5, and food vouchers are available for $10. WKCTC will make available on a first-come basis free tickets for parents and students facing attendance barriers. All Month: Special Menus at Kitchens Cafe
Throughout February, Kitchens Cafe at the Paducah School of Art & Design will feature a special menu highlighting the work of prominent Black chefs, including Lazarus Lynch and Alexander Smalls, alongside dishes inspired by the works of Crystal Wilkinson and Nicole A.
