Book Discussion of New York Times Best Seller Braving the Wilderness November 1 at Graves County Public Library

Paducah, KY (10/18/2018) — Courage, vulnerability, love, belonging, shame and empathy are the experiences that social scientist Dr. Brené Brown brings to light in her book Braving the Wilderness. West Kentucky Community and Technical College's Dr. Tyra Henderson will host a book discussion on the New York Times best seller November 1 from 6-8 p.m. at the Graves County Public Library.

"Braving the Wilderness is poignant and relevant, because at our core, we all want to feel like we belong," said Henderson, WKCTC associate professor of English and director of Accelerate U! at Murray State University. "But at some point in life, we will face fierce challenges, and we have to decide who we are. Do we succumb to outside forces that may contradict who we fundamentally are or do we have the strength to stand our ground-even if that ground is seemingly all alone in a 'wilderness.' Reading Brown's exploration of what it is to be in the wilderness is refreshing and empowering."

With her trademark mix of research, storytelling and honesty, Brown writes in Braving the Wilderness, "True belonging requires us to believe in and belong to ourselves so fully that we can find sacredness both in being a part of something and in standing alone when necessary. But in a culture that's rife with perfectionism and pleasing, and with the erosion of civility, it's easy to stay quiet, hide in our ideological bunkers, or fit in rather than show up as our true selves and brave the wilderness of uncertainty and criticism..."

Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston who has spent the past two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame and empathy. She is the author of four books: The Gifts of Imperfection, Daring Greatly, Rising Strong, and Braving the Wilderness. Her new book, Dare to Lead: Brave Work. Tough Conversations. Whole Hearts., was released in October 2018, and is the culmination of a seven-year study on courage and leadership.
