Local Students Perform One Act Play Friday at WKCTC

Paducah, KY (06/13/2018) — The musical, "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," will be presented by area students June 15 at 6:30 p.m. on the Clemens Fine Arts Theatre stage at West Kentucky Community and Technical College.

The show is open to the public. There is no admission charge. A reception honoring the cast will follow in WKCTC's student center adjacent to the theatre.

Directed by Ken Owen, the performance is part of the college's Creative Exploration Drama Camp, which is in its 15th year of summer theatrical work at the college. The five-day camp for students in 6th - 12th grade helps students explore their creative side while also learning the elements of play production and performance.

This year, 12 students have developed the one-act musical, which tells the age-old story of Tom Sawyer (played by Paducah Tilghman High School student Daniel Preklas) being punished by his Aunt Polly (Paducah Middle School student Erica Wurth) and made to whitewash a fence.

Other students in the show beg Tom to let them whitewash the fence. Each familiar character found in the story written by Mark Twain falls for the opportunity to take the job of whitewashing the fence. Finally, Becky Thatcher (Clark Elementary School student Lilly Smith of Paducah) steals his heart.

In addition to Preklas, Wurth, and Smith, other students involved in the production are Aiden Ledbetter and Dalton Ledbetter, both Unity Elementary students; Alexis Cork and Payton Ledgerwood, both Lone Oak Elementary students; Brandon McFarland, a Paducah Tilghman High School student; Ka'Reece Reed, a Morgan Elementary School student; Maya Smith and Milleah Smith, both St. Mary Schools students, and Hosanna Easton, a Community Christian Academy student.

Organizers said patrons who make the show possible include WKCTC, McDonalds House of Charity, Sams Club, Just Burgers, Noble Park Dairy Queen, Cash Savers Grocery, Banks Market, Midtown Market, Pizza Inn and CHA Travel.
