WKCTC Offers New Advanced Pharmacy Tech Classes this Fall

Required Pre-admission Conference Monday

by Janett Blythe

Paducah, KY (02/07/2019) — An advanced level pharmacy technology diploma program will be offered at West Kentucky Community and Technical College this fall.

Applications for the fall semester are now also being accepted for the new advanced level along with the entry-level pharmacy technician certificate program, which is one of the certificate options for students pursuing a health science technology degree.

Pharmacy technicians are employed in a variety of pharmacy practice settings. Supervised by a registered pharmacist, they perform a host of technical duties related to preparing and dispensing drugs in accordance with standard procedures and laws.

Nationwide, employment of pharmacy technicians is projected to grow 12 percent from 2016 to 2026, according to the U. S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics.

"We know our population is aging, especially in our region," said Melissa Burgess, WKCTC's pharmacy technology program coordinator. "Older people typically use more prescription medicines than younger people so we know there is a need for these allied health professionals and we're pleased to be able to expand our options in this field for our students."

The fall semester at WKCTC begins August 19. To be eligible to take any pharmacy technology classes at WKCTC this fall, interested individuals must submit the required application and attend a pre-admission conference. The first pre-admission conference will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday, February 11 in the Anderson Technology Building, Room 207. The applications can also be picked up outside Room 213 in the same building.

Other pre-admission conferences will be held at 3:30 p.m. in Room 207 of Anderson building on February 13, February 25 and March 4.

For more information, contact Burgess at (270) 534-3495.
