WKCTC's Paducah School of Art and Design Opens Exhibits Next Week

Lower Town Arts District and Freda Fairchild Memorial Exhibitions

MEDIA RELEASE: Paducah, KY (10/04/2017) — Next week, West Kentucky Community and Technical College's Paducah School of Art and Design (PSAD) will open Legacy 2 - the Lower Town Arts District, an exhibition of artworks by past and present artists who pioneered or continue to have an association with Paducah's Lower Town Arts District. The exhibition is complemented by a memorial exhibition for Freda Fairchild, a leader among Lower Town's art community who passed away in June 2017.

The public is invited to the free opening reception for Legacy 2 and Freda Fairchild: beyond expectations October 12 from 5 -7 p.m. at PSAD's 2D and Graphic Design Building at 905 Harrison Street in Paducah's Lower Town Arts District. Legacy 2 will be presented in the Bill Ford Gallery and the Fairchild memorial exhibition will be presented on the first-floor alcove gallery and upstairs in the PJC Gallery. Both exhibitions will be on display through November 8.

Legacy 2 includes works in a wide variety of media by over 40 artists who live or lived in Lower Town, and in most cases, came to Paducah in response to the city's nationally recognized Artist Relocation Program.

PSAD Dean Paul Aho said the college's art school is delighted to host the Legacy 2 exhibition showcasing the multitude of talent that shaped the success of the Artist Relocation Program, which continues to contribute to Paducah's recognition as a UNESCO Creative City and cultural destination.

"We are also particularly pleased to accompany this recognition with an exhibition in memory of Freda Fairchild, one of Lower Town's earliest and most notable artists. It is a perfect opportunity to acknowledge Freda's work as an artist along with the community of artists whose lives she touched in many ways," said Aho. "Given PSAD's role in supporting the arts within western Kentucky, it is also fitting that we have the resources to host both exhibitions, and we are grateful to Freda's family and her niece Shand Stamper in particular for curating the exhibition of Freda's work."

PSAD, a division of West Kentucky Community and Technical College, offers an Associate in Fine Arts degree in Visual Art and an Associate in Applied Science degree and certificate programs in Visual Communication: Multimedia, as well as studio art classes for students of all levels and disciplines. Classes are offered on WKCTC's campus, 905 Harrison Street and 919 Madison Street.
